Top 5 Reasons I Love My Chiropractor or Why Is It Good To Get Chiropractic Treatment After An Accident?

by Roscoe Myrick

Why Is It Good To Get Chiropractic Treatment After An Accident? Disclaimer: I am not a doctor.  If you are reading this after a severe injury, I recommend you see your primary care physician in order to help you choose the appropriate course of action.

This essay is specifically about my personal and professional experience working in personal injury law.  I work as a paralegal at Peterson Law Offices. Every case on my desk deals with clients who are injured.

Nearly all of them will ask me for advice  when they are considering the numerous courses of treatment, including physical therapy, acupuncture, surgery and chiropractic.

Careful not to give any medical advice, I always tell them that care is about preference. However, if my clients just want a little direction, I nearly always tell my clients to go to chiropractic first.

To be clear, all these professions are providing proven treatment courses for most soft tissue injuries, but I believe chiropractic is the first step on the road to recovery.

I wanted to write this because I’m always looking for ways to get better at my job. I’m curious about why I always feel better after my chiropractor visit. It seems to defy logic, but after a bit of research I found that the treatment described as “treatment of the hands” is far more rooted in strict scientific research than I anticipated.  It pleased me because I’ve been referring my clients to chiropractors for their medical treatment for years.

What is Chiropractic?

First it’s important to understand what chiropractic is.  Chiropractors are all about improving the function of the nervous system.

They are concerned with restoring balance and getting your joints and muscles to work with each other.

They operate as a relationship counselor for the different parts of your body when time and happenstance make them forget how much they need each other.

5- Pain is Lame

Let’s be honest,  no one says, I think my ilia might be misaligned from my motor vehicle accident so I better go have them checked out. People seek out chiropractors because they are in pain and pain is lame. When you have it, you want it gone.

But it’s important to remember that pain they bodies way of sending a distress signal. It’s purposive, it’s the bodies first response.  Ignoring it by treating pain as a symptom is sort of like dropping food off for stranded castaways. Your body is like,

“Thanks for the grub bro, but maybe you could send the rescue boat?

For chiropractors, their business is getting their client healthy. Feeling good only for moments doesn’t make for a healthy lifestyle. I spoke with a respected professional in the field about car accident injuries specifically. He said that a big problem with car accident injuries is they typically have an unnatural healing pattern.

In a car accident all your muscles tense up when stressed by the sudden movement, often causing radiating back pain that extends to the arms and legs.

Normally, our bodies are injured and get better over time. These type of injuries often result in the opposite pattern; you walk away feeling fine but a couple of months in you get the sudden surprise of back pain.  Without treatment this tightness can actually make your joint dysfunction worse.

By targeting a goal-oriented approach to health, chiropractic treatment is designed provide long term results for your overall health.

4- It’s Comprehensive

Chiropractors are trained to understand your condition comprehensively. My chiropractor is constantly asking me questions. I’m always thinking, why do you need to know about how my father and mother are getting around, why are you so interested in my attendance at run club, or what I had for dinner last night?

I did some research and there is some method to this madness. Chiropractors are trained to evaluate the entirety of your physical life in order to treat your specific ailments. Your exercise, family history, and nutrition, are, among other things, the key to recovery.

3-It’s Natural

A lot of the clients who ask me about their medical treatment are facing surgery.  They are worried because the costs of surgery are at times prohibitive and the risks are significant.  Even with a successful surgery, the long term outlook is indeterminable.

Once you weaken your structural integrity, it is very difficult to predict whether it will ever return to 100%. Those looking for an alternative for surgery should look first for a chiropractor. Chiropractors use joint and soft tissue manipulations to restore balance to your body.

The discipline operates under the credo that a healthy and natural solution is the best for your long term success. Your body is the best healer and chiropractors are trying to fine tune the machine so it can work to improve and heal itself.  Allowing your body to work to heal itself, is the best kind of health.

2- Chiropractors are the First Link in the Chain

Chiropractors are specialists in the neuro-musculo-skeletal system.  They can assess soft tissue/bone/joint/nerve related symptoms.  If you have a non-severe injury you may be able to go straight to your chiropractor for an assessment after the injury.

They then will be able to refer you out to a physical therapist and/or alternative care. Chiropractic treatment is non-invasive and avoids using prescription drugs as a way of treating symptoms instead of solving the problem.

This is why I believe chiropractic is the first link in the chain for treatment. Treatment, like surgery, pharmaceuticals, and pain relievers should be used as a last resort.  If you are faced with one of these outcomes, a chiropractor might be someone to consult first.

1. Manipulations, Manipulations, Manipulations…

A chiropractic manipulation refers to a chiropractor applying manipulation the vertebrae that have dysfunction.  Manipulations on a level between 1-4 involve prolonged oscillation to varying degrees. However, you know how people say,

“ I went to my chiropractor and they did one thing and boom! I was fixed.”

Chances are that might be a grade 5 manipulation. Basically, if a chiropractor had a superpower it would be go go gadget grade 5 manipulations. These are effective for joints that need to be adjusted to operate normally. The manipulation restores the motion in the joint. Washington and Arkansas are the only states where chiropractors are even allowed to perform grade 5 manipulations. This is the big time.

Conclusion

We can all take a deep breath. We live in a time of medical excellence.  Mr. Peterson told me he’s noticed this over time. He says he spends less time dealing with complicated cases that include expensive surgeries with extensive rehab. Over the years the medical field has advanced to a level of efficiency that I think typically goes unnoticed.

Our clients have continually gotten better… faster… cheaper… and ultimately end up healthier as the years have gone by.  I think that is just fantastic.  Keep it 100 humanity.
